Artist: After/Circle of Charles DeLafosse

Medium: Chalks

Subject: Taken from a subject within the master ‘Adoration of the Magi’ [Musée du Louvre, Paris]

There is an example of this held at the British Museum (Number 1854,0628.66) which was long regarded as by Watteau until Jean-Pierre Cuzin's article in 1981 where he pointed out that the present drawing was related to the head of the African servant and its companion to his master in Lafosse's late painting, the 'Adoration of the Magi'.

Aside from two British Museum drawings for the canvas there is a compositional study in a private Portuguese collection and a copy after the present drawing was with the Galerie Éric Coatalem in Paris (Gomez 2006, II, no. D.R. 22).

Condition: Generally good with small loss to top right hand corner and a left to right fold lower.

** Last images show the style and technique comparisons against the one held at the British Museum whilst being superimposed.
